MONTREAL, QUEBEC — (Marketwired) — 06/21/13 — It is with pride that WWF-Canada (WWF) has agreed to present two giant panda sculptures that will be featured as part of the Mosaicultures Internationales de Montreal 2013 – Terre d–Esperance (MIM2013). From June 21st to September 29th, visitors will be greeted by more than 50 works from 20 countries. More than 200 artists take part in the world–s most important horticultural exhibition.
“We are thrilled to be associated with this event, especially since the Land of Hope theme, celebrating the beauty and richness of life on earth, is directly related to our mission,” says Marie-Claude Lemieux, Director for Quebec WWF. “The pressure on natural resources has doubled since 1966. It would take the resources of one and a half planets to support human activity at its current rate. The time has come to reduce our footprint and the Mosaicultures exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to remind us of this.”
Presenting the giant panda work was a natural choice for WWF, as this species has special significance to the organization. It became WWF–s symbol in 1961, soon after the organization was founded. One of the world–s most powerful icons of species conservation, the giant panda remains threatened to this day by the loss of its natural habitat due to human activities. Only 1,600 remain in the wild.
From WWF–s origins as a small group of committed wildlife enthusiasts, the organization has grown into one of the world–s largest and most respected conservation leaders – supported by 5 million people and active in over 100 countries on five continents. Over time, WWF–s work has evolved from protecting particular wildlife species and habitats to protecting life on Earth, including our own.
