Shining a Light on Energy Savings: Great Eastern Energy–s Annual “Energize the Community” Holiday Donation Helps Local Non-Profit Promote Its “Bright” Idea

BROOKLYN, NY — (Marketwired) — 12/02/14 — Trusted energy partner, Great Eastern Energy (GEE), selected the New York City non-profit, White Roof Project, as the recipient of its 2014 “Energize the Community” holiday donation. White Roof raises awareness about energy efficiency and cost savings by painting black tar roofs with a solar-reflective bright white coating. It–s a simple change that lowers building temperatures inside and out, decreasing energy use and emissions. A check for $10,000 was presented to the White Roof Project at a donation ceremony held at GEE–s Brooklyn, NY offices.

GEE is an alternative energy supplier of natural gas, electricity and energy solutions in NY, NJ, and MA. The company–s mission is to help businesses and property owners control energy costs and increase their bottom-line. The GEE annual “Energize the Community” holiday donation is part of its continued commitment to assist organizations in raising awareness around energy consumption issues. The hope is that these kinds of initiatives will trickle down and benefit the entire community.

Through energy advocacy, communities are learning that a roof painted with solar-reflective white paint reflects up to 90% of sunlight as opposed to the 20% reflected by a traditional black roof. On a 90 degrees F day, the temperature of a black roof can a scorching reach 180 degrees F, while the same roof painted white might only reach 100 degrees F, resulting in a 30% reduction in cooling costs.

“Organizations like the White Roof Project are working hard to not only promote sustainability, but also to engage with and help their neighbors create a better and greener environment,” Allan Brenner, Managing Member and Chief Financial Officer of GEE said. “Every year we look for organizations that make a difference in our community and the White Roof Project certainly fits that criteria.”

Executive Director of the White Roof Project, Rachel Laiserin, was present during the donation ceremony. “White roofing is a cost-effective, tangible solution that allows communities to start making change around these critical issues,” said Laiserin. “We are so honored and grateful to Great Eastern Energy for their support and we look forward to working with them to make communities more sustainable.”
