When independent energy producer NRG Energy initially proposed the installation of solar panels at the 85,000-seat stadium, some were a bit dubious. “At first, I was a little unbelieving that we could actually get it done,” says Lon Rosenberg, senior vice president of operations for the Washington Redskins. “But the more I spent time talking to the folks at NRG, they convinced me that we could pull this thing off and get it done right, and do it for our fans.”
The project entailed the installation of 8,000 solar panels at the stadium. NRG chose NECA contractor Truland Systems Corporation as the contractor for the project, which used electricians from IBEW Local 26.
The installation was a success, and the panels now meet 15% of the stadium–s power needs on game days and provide 100% of the power on non-game days. In addition, the team installed 10 electric vehicle charging stations for fans to use.
