Mining Leaders to Meet With Renewable Energy Experts in Toronto Next Week

TORONTO, ONTARIO — (Marketwired) — 09/18/13 — Over 250 attendees from the mining industry and the renewable energy sector are expected at the inaugural Renewable Energy and Mining Summit in Toronto next week. The Summit, for which Hatch is the principal sponsor, will outline the latest case studies and opportunities for using renewables to power mines. Senior energy decision-makers from the mining industry will join renewable energy experts specializing in remote power solutions at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on September 25-26.

This is the first time an industry event has brought together these two sectors to understand the opportunities for cooperating and the cost savings renewable energy offers mining. The Summit will provide experience and detail on the economics, practicalities, finance and implementation of using wind, solar, geothermal and hydro to power mine sites. Canadian Clean Energy Conferences is organizing the Summit and has publicized the list of companies attending today on the event web site ().

Ross Beaty, founder and chairman of Pan American Silver Corp., the world–s second largest primary silver mining company, and chairman of Alterra Power Corp., a renewable energy developer in British Columbia, is providing the opening keynote at the Summit. “I think the Summit is going to be an interesting dialogue between mining companies using or wanting to use renewable energy as part of their power needs and renewable energy companies looking to provide clean energy to mines,” says Beaty.

“I am looking forward to hearing the technical case studies that show how various developers have applied solutions and networking with individuals who are able to help develop and finance renewable energy developments associated with mining companies,” added Scott Fraser, Director of Power Projects at Barrick Gold Corporation, who is also speaking at the Summit. “I expect this forum will assist developers in understanding the differences between conventional Feed-in Tariff (FIT) projects associated with a regulated utility and the more specific needs of the mining industry.”

A number of leading renewable energy developers and suppliers are sponsoring the event including principal sponsor Hatch and Thought-Leader Sponsors Siemens, ABB, Mainstream Renewable Power, and SMA. They are joined by SolarReserve, Schneider Electric, the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association, Oya Solar, American Vanadium, Eco Waste Solution, Aeronautica Windpower, Bella Energy and SkyFuel who are also sponsoring.

Alongside the event, Canadian Clean Energy Conferences has produced an industry report entitled Renewable Energy and Mining, which will provide details on the various case studies from mining companies featured at the event.
