Media Advisory: WWF Hosts Briefing on Australia–s Experience With Carbon Pricing and What it Means for Canada

TORONTO, ONTARIO — (Marketwire) — 09/05/12 — In advance of the upcoming meeting of provincial energy ministers, join WWF, sustainability experts, and businesses leaders from both Canada and Australia to learn more about how Canada can learn from Australia–s experience with carbon pricing and the opportunities for provincial leadership.

Canada has an invaluable opportunity to learn from Australia, which implemented a price on carbon on July 1, 2012, as part of a transition to emissions trading in 2015. With comparable energy and resource-based export economies, both Canada and Australia are both struggling to address high per-capita greenhouse gas emissions. As the impacts of climate change on Australia–s economy become more evident, the federal government has taken action.

At the same time, Canada is seeing valuable leadership from provinces and businesses, but national energy strategy discussions to date have not focused on a price on carbon, which WWF believes is essential to any effective strategy.

In advance of the upcoming Energy Minister–s meeting, WWF is hosting a panel of business representatives and policy experts to discuss the issue. Experts will make brief presentations and then take questions.
