Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Statement on Passing of NDP Leader Jack Layton

KITIGAN ZIBI ANISHINABEG, QUEBEC — (Marketwire) — 08/23/11 — Chief Gilbert W. Whiteduck, on behalf of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, released the following statement today regarding the passing of Canada–s new Democratic Party(NDP) Leader Jack Layton.

“The Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation was saddened to hear of the passing of the NDP Leader Jack Layton and we extend our deepest condolences to his family. Mr. Layton represented what was just and honest in Canada. He was a man of integrity and vision who understood the many struggles facing First Nations in Canada. He understood and supported our determination to forge a better future for our children and to find our rightful place in Canada.”

Chief Whiteduck went on to say, “Mr. Layton was always passionate in regards to making Canada a better more just country. Mr. Layton was the only leader representing a national Federal party that stated that the Parliament of Canada and the City of Ottawa was established on Algonquin Territory. He had the courage to speak and walk the truth. Mr. Layton will be missed”.
