Food Bioengineered Labeling&Disclosure

The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard (7 CFR 66)( https://ecfr.io/…), announced on December 20, 2018, requires that bioengineered (BE) foods be properly disclosed by food manufacturers, importers, and certain retailers. The mandatory compliance date is January 1, 2022, and implementation dates vary depending on the size of the business.

According to the Standard, a food is bioengineered (BE) if it contains detectable genetic material that has been modified through lab techniques and cannot be created through conventional breeding or found in nature.

USDA?s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) published a List of Bioengineered Foods (https://www.ams.usda.gov/rules-regulations/be) to help identify foods that are regulated and to provide guidance on BE labeling.

?The National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard increases the transparency of our nation?s food system, establishing guidelines for regulated entities on when and how to disclose bioengineered ingredients. This ensures clear information and labeling consistency for consumers about the ingredients in their food,? said Secretary Perdue. ?The Standard also avoids a patchwork state-by-state system that could be confusing to consumers.?
