College Park, MD Hotel–s Eco-Friendly Initiatives Earn Recognition

HYATTSVILLE, MD — (Marketwire) — 09/07/11 — The Marriott Inn & Conference Center, University of Maryland University College has received its Green Seal Certification, it was announced today by Mike McCarthy, CHA, General Manager.

This has the unique distinction of being named the country–s first environmentally friendly hotel and conference center in 2004 when it received its LEED certification for using recyclable materials and energy-saving systems in every part of the facility to ensure a positive impact on the environment.

The hotel has been “Silver Level” certified which means that it has achieved all of the following criteria:

Waste Minimization

Energy Efficiency, Conservation, and Management

Management of Fresh Water Resources

Waste Water Management

Hazardous Substances

Environmentally and Socially Sensitive Purchasing Policy

According to Mr. McCarthy, the hotel has made a number of impactful changes including a robust front and back of the house and guest room recycling program as well as a composting initiative that captures nearly 100% of the hotel–s food waste. Many other changes were made as well including high-efficiency dimmable lighting, a drought resistant exterior landscaping which has no irrigation system, use of non-chlorine cleaners as well as green cleaning products, and low VOC paints to name a few. Additionally, this tries to use environmentally responsible suppliers whenever possible.

“In 2007, 95% of our hotel–s waste went to trash,” notes Mr. McCarthy. “Last year, that amount was reduced to 35% trash and 62% compost and recycling.” He also adds that the will be undergoing renovations and enhancements over the next few years designed to enhance their eco-friendly policies.
