EDMONTON, ALBERTA — (Marketwire) — 07/15/11 — The Climate Change and Emissions Management (CCEMC) Corporation is making $10 million in funding available to support small and medium sized businesses that are in the early stages of developing new . Eligible projects include proof-of-concept, research and development and small pilot scale initiatives.
“The CCEMC knows that small and medium sized businesses are historically very strong innovators,” said CCEMC Chair Eric Newell. “With this expression of interest we–re inviting them to give us their very best ideas to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta and support our transition to a lower carbon economy.”
Private sector businesses that are developing ideas linked to conservation and efficiency, greening energy production, and carbon capture and storage are encouraged to review the Expression of Interest guidelines available on the , ccemc.ca. Small and medium sized private sector organizations having fewer than 250 employees are eligible.
“We recognize that small companies can often find it difficult to access the capital required to advance their technologies,” said Newell. “That–s why the CCEMC is issuing this EOI for small and medium sized organizations with creative ideas to address greenhouse gas reductions.”
The focus of this Expression of Interest is on product and market challenges that if resolved, could lead to significant greenhouse gas reductions. The maximum the CCEMC will contribute to projects responding to this Expression of Interest is 50 per cent of eligible project costs to a maximum of $500,000.
While the funding is for small and medium sized businesses, team members may include industry, international organizations, service companies, technology licensors, consultants, academia, not-for-profit organizations, and government. Businesses that submit proposals need not be located in Alberta but the technology must have applications within the province.
The CCEMC provides information sessions to ensure proponents have a clear understanding of the submission and evaluation process. Information sessions will be held in Edmonton on September 6 and Calgary on September 8. The expression of interest submission deadline is 4:30 MDT, October 29, 2011. Submissions can be submitted online through ccemcadmin.ca starting August 8.
To date the CCEMC has announced support for 27 projects with a total project value of more than $630 million. Combined, the projects are estimated to reduce GHG emissions by 23 megatonnes over 10 years.
Since 2007, Alberta companies that annually produce more than 100,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions are legally required to reduce their greenhouse gas intensity by 12 per cent. One compliance option is to pay into the Climate Change and Emissions Management Fund at $15/tonne.
The CCEMC is a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to establish or participate in funding for initiatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support adaptation. The CCEMC invests in discovery, development, and operational deployment of clean technologies.
