Save the Children Announces $500,000 Contribution to Flood Relief Efforts in Mozambique

WASHINGTON, DC — (Marketwired) — 05/21/13 — Save the Children, the leading independent organization for children in need, today announced it has received a contribution of $500,000 from the sponsors of Mozambique LNG to support Save the Children–s ongoing flood-relief efforts in Mozambique. The Mozambique LNG sponsors are affiliates of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (operator), Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos, de Moçambique E.P. (ENH), Mitsui & Co., Ltd., Bharat PetroResources Ltd, Videocon Hydrocarbon Holdings, Ltd, and PTT Exploration & Production.

“The devastating floods that occurred in Mozambique in January and February of 2013 affected nearly half-a-million people,” said Save the Children–s Mozambique Country Director John Grabowski. “Mozambique LNG–s support will contribute to providing immediate, life-saving needs for flood-affected families, and will further help communities with longer-term recovery. The funds will also contribute to construction of homes in safer areas using locally available materials, as well as education efforts centered on addressing the risks and vulnerabilities to similar weather events in local communities.”

The overall objective of the 12-month project is to meet the most urgent needs of flood-affected children and their families by providing relief supplies and services that preserve health and dignity during displacement and facilitate safe returns. The primary beneficiaries of the program are the flood-affected children and their communities, specifically those that were displaced from their homes to temporary accommodation centers and resettlement areas following the flooding.

“We recognized the tremendous need, and Save the Children provided the ideal vehicle for Mozambique LNG to help restore hope to affected communities in Mozambique,” said John Peffer, Anadarko–s Country Manager in Mozambique. “We are grateful for the work Save the Children is doing to help Mozambique overcome the tragic weather events that occurred earlier this year.”
