Canadian Energy Pipeline Association: Regulatory Filing Completed for West Coast Pipeline Expansion Project

CALGARY, ALBERTA — (Marketwired) — 12/16/13 — One of CEPA–s member companies, Kinder Morgan Canada, which operates the Trans Mountain Pipeline system, reached an important milestone today by filing its application with the National Energy Board (NEB) for a proposed expansion of its existing pipeline system.

“The filing of this application is an important milestone for the company and the industry,” Brenda Kenny, president and CEO of the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA) said following the announcement. “There are many regulatory requirements that still need to be reached before a final decision, but this filing clearly indicates the need for additional pipeline capacity to the west coast.”

A comprehensive regulatory review of the application will be conducted by the NEB over the coming months. This includes a thorough examination of the safety, environmental and socio-economic considerations from a wide range of stakeholders. In doing so, this will enable the NEB to make a fully-informed recommendation to determine if the proposed expansion is in the best interest of Canadians.

“Our member companies are under strict regulatory oversight and we believe in the regulatory process.” Kenny said. “Over the next several months, the proponent will continue to work with all affected stakeholders. We look forward to watching this project, and others, as they move through the regulatory process.”

CEPA strongly supports all projects that will help alleviate the current capacity constraints and help the industry reach new markets. The need for new markets is critical to Canada–s long-term economic well-being.

The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association represents Canada–s transmission pipeline companies who operate approximately 115,000 kilometres of pipelines in Canada. In 2012, these energy highways moved approximately 1.2 billion barrels of liquid petroleum products and 5.1 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Our members transport 97 per cent of Canada–s daily natural gas and onshore crude oil from producing regions to markets throughout North America.
