Alberta Innovates-Energy and Environment Solutions Announces $2 Million Call for Proposals-Next Generation Renewable Energy Storage Technologies

EDMONTON, ALBERTA — (Marketwired) — 11/19/14 — Today, Alberta Innovates – Energy and Environment Solutions (AI-EES) announced they are making $2 Million in funding available to help develop the most promising next-generation energy storage technologies for Alberta. AI-EES is looking for technology providers – from Alberta and beyond — that have ideas for energy storage to enable and accelerate the deployment of wind and solar power in Alberta.

Renewable Energy development can help Alberta meet its climate change goals. AI-EES– 2030 target is that 20 per cent of the province–s electrical generation will come from renewable sources with an energy storage capacity equivalent to 2.5 per cent of total electrical generation.

“The province of Alberta has strong wind and solar energy potential, but electricity needs to be available when the light switches go on, not just when the wind is blowing and the sun is shining. Energy storage technologies will assist in making widespread use of those resources,” says Mark Summers, Director of Renewable Energy for AI-EES.

“This initiative is an indication of Alberta–s desire to play a leadership role in shaping the future of energy storage. Our Call of Proposals will help AI-EES meet its goals for adoption of renewable energy by developing energy storage for intermittent renewable electricity onto the provincial electric grid.”

AI-EES issued a Call for Proposals to facilitate the increased use of renewable energy in Alberta. Applications are due January 29, 2015. The Corporation will fund up to $250,000 per approved project with up to $2 Million of funds committed. Proposals will be accepted from around the globe; however, applicants must demonstrate that the technology is applicable and well-suited for Alberta.

Project selection will be based on technologies that demonstrate significant potential to provide innovative, cost-competitive energy storage solutions that are well-suited to Alberta–s electricity system. For more information visit: ai-ees.ca/opportunities.
